All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.
These are the things I learned:

  • Share everything.
  • Play fair.
  • Don't hit people.
  • Put things back where you found them.
  • Clean up your own mess.
  • Don't take things that aren't yours.
  • Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
  • Wash your hands before you eat.
  • Flush.
  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  • Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
  • Take a nap every afternoon.
  • When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
  • Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
  • Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
  • And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.
Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Today was Riley's last day of kindergarten.  It is both a truly sad moment and a happy moment all in one.  I get teary eyed looking at Riley and being amazed at what a brilliant kid she is.  Kindergarten has by far been the best experience she has had in terms of maturing emotionally and actually learning a great deal.  I get sad at the thought that today it's celebrating her last day of kindergarten and before I know it, I will be crying at her high school graduation.  I am genuinely in awe at the fact that I get to call Riley, my daughter.  I pray that her love for school and learning never stray and that she will continue to ask questions, be curious and listen closely.

Riley (and us, indirectly) really hit the jackpot with her teacher.  Mrs. Merritt had Riley pegged from day one and really went above and beyond in her job to help keep Riley interested in learning.  I know this to be true because when Riley got off the bus today, she looked sad.  She waited until she got in the house to cry.  She cried because she was so sad that she had to leave Mrs. Merritt and kindergarten and that she had the "best year ever."  I feel bad for whatever teacher she gets in 1st grade - I'm not quite sure they'll hold a candle to Mrs. Merritt.

Riley learned an awful lot this year and what I love most is the fact the she can READ!  Amazing!!  Her writing has improved tremendously and thankfully she has her daddy's knack for math!  We're excited to see what the 1st grade will bring.  But, we'll certainly enjoy the summer first!!!

What a difference from the first day of school to the last month of school.

Take me out to the ball game!

The T-ball season is officially over!  Riley had a great season playing for the River Bandits.  This past Saturday was the last game and all the kids received their trophy for surviving the season!!!  I added a quick video at the end showing Riley's last at bat in her t-ball career.  She was the last batter, so you just run all the bases - but she hit that ball pretty good, so I think it was a home run anyway!!!  :)

Always the Overachiever!

Riley has had one very wiggly and one slightly wiggly tooth for a few weeks now.  On Thursday, June 12th everyone was over to celebrate Jeremy's birthday.  Who knew we'd be celebrating something else too!  During cake Riley announced that she had lost her tooth!!!  How exciting, right?!?!  Wrong!  A few hours later while brushing her teeth, the second one came out too!  Riley was always quite the overachiever - so why wouldn't she lose 2 teeth in one day?!?!

So we were all very excited and couldn't wait to see what the Tooth Fairy would bring!

Riley excitedly placed her 2 teeth in a zip lock bag and placed it under her pillow.

In the morning she woke up to a super sparkly $10 bill and a new toothbrush.  Exciting stuff!!!

She told me she didn't want to spend her sparkly money - but I'm guessing when she sees something she likes, she'll throw that idea out the window!!!!!!!!

Take me to the art show!

One of the exciting events at Walberta Park is the end of the year art show.  It's for grades K-4 and the art was pretty impressive for elementary school kids.

Of course, I saw 2 perfect pieces of art hanging in the halls that I couldn't wait to have in my house!!  Riley did an awesome job on her sunflower vase and her self-portrait.  It's amazing to see how much more artistic this kid is than I'll ever be!

Great job, Riley!!

You Gotta Strut Like You Mean It!!

5, 6, 7, 8...Celebrate! was the theme of Riley's dance recital.  This year for dance we moved to a new studio and I'm so glad we did.  Riley joined The Movement Box and attended their Hip, Hop & Bop class.  She loved it!!  She did a number to the Cheetah Girls "Strut" - and those ladies sure did strut their stuff.  I'm so proud of Riley, who is already excited about returning to dance in the fall.  After the recital we all headed back to the house and had a super fun BBQ!

Avery apparently was not into the dance recital and slept through the entire 1st Act!

Apparently, what happens in May, stays in May!

Wow, talk about the slacking blogger!  There's been so much to blog about but seriously so little time to do it in!  Riley and Avery (and our work schedules) have certainly been keeping us busy, busy, busy!!

So I guess I should do a fairly brief recap of the lovely days of May:

The girls are loving life.  Avery is in the last of the infant rooms at daycare and Riley is winding down her fabulous year in kindergarten.

We celebrated Uncle Matt's birthday in the beginning of May.

T-ball officially started!  Riley is the only girl on the River Bandits, but that does not stop her from hanging with the boys.  She plays as well, if not better, than several of them.

We celebrated Mother's Day and it was the best one!  We went to Beaver Lake in the morning where I got to run and then met up with Jeremy and the kids to walk the trails.

Riley had her dance class pictures and got ready to perform at her recital.

Riley participated in 3 fun runs this month and made this running mama proud!!!  She runs an 8:37 mile and she could kick my butt in a race any day!!  She's racking up the medals.

We planted some flowers for our window boxes - so far 2 out of 3 of them are still alive!

At the end of May, we celebrated Memorial Day and my birthday.

With a busy May, I'm thinking we'll also have a pretty busy June.  But then it will be summer and hopefully there won't be so much running around and maybe we'll have time to do a little more family stuff and relaxing.
